In 2015 Pentagram was tasked with developing the identity for the first installment of a new theatrical series in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. We collaborated closely on the project with the team at Warner Bros. Pictures and The Blair Partnership. The logo takes cues from the Harry Potter franchise, but integrates specific characteristics from the plot to form a unique identity that still feels familiar to fans.

Based on the logo we developed a complete custom typeface aptly named Fontastic Beasts. It consists of two weights—Roman and beastly—that are intended to be used interchangeably. We created localizations for several international markets, which meant finding new ways to integrate the signature components and an “FB” monogram for shorthand in social media.

We also had the surprise pleasure of seeing it parodied on the Daily Show—it really takes on a different meaning with the change of one letter!
